It was fun. Actually, a lot more than that. Although everything started slow.
After the official start at 4 pm, my stand also got crowded. In fact, I was as surprised as I was amazed by the public interest. It was quite an experience to talk to so many people, some of whom also shared their own experiences. Not surprisingly, many of them had a migration background.
A particularly memorable moment was the visit of a mixed-heritage family. The boy, or rather a young adult, was a bit shy at the beginning. In our discussion, I pointed out that, despite the fact that our image of antiquity is often “white” (see, for example, all the white marble statues), the majority of the protagonists in Cyprian’s letters were without a doubt people of colour. One could see the “aha!” moment in his eyes and how this remark sparked his interest. We had a great conversation.
Admittedly, it was quite an effort to prep digital material and set up everything as a one man show. Yet, the encounters and the many positive feedbacks I received really made my day. If I am around, I will definitely be there next time!
